Cat’s Rants: Confessions of an Occult Mastermind

Everything you ever wanted to know about Hoodoo, Rootwork, or the Occult! The internet’s longest running occult blog, established 2004

Hey Occulties,

Occaisionally I get some pretty funny email (whether or not that is the intention behind it,) so without further ado, a reader had asked me this:

Q: Dear Cat, have you ever been in outerspace? I am pretty sure you haven’t, but I wondered – would spells still work if you cast them while in outerspace? Thank you in advance.

A: I don’t even like flying in airplanes, so I don’t want to know what sort of anti-anxiety meds I’d require for a trip out past the safety of the Earth’s atmosphere…and also, I don’t have the science degrees or flight experience required to be an astronaut. It sounds as though you had gotten that it was pretty unlikely that NASA had tried to jettison a rootworker into space just yet. 😉

800px-Messier51 However, what the Almighty did provide me with is a good brain for hypothetical situations. I am just taking an educated guess here, but I would say, yes, it is possible to successfully spellcast while in outer space (assuming you are in a place where you can breathe oxygen, and also where other things requiring oxygen to work, such as flame, can be allowed the amount of needed air to work.) Now, on that note, I’m no astronaut, but I’m going to presume that lighting candles on a space station in zero gravity is a really bad, really dangerous idea. I am not really sure a flaming stick of wax is the sort of thing one wants floating around in an environment where even the oxygen must be supplied, so we might say that, for safety reasons, candle magic would not be well-advised while in the types of environments humans can survive in while outside of the Earth’s atmosphere. I suspect making charms, would work… Um, taking ritual baths would probably be very very difficult. I mean, you would have to make the “tea” out of the herb, and then find a method of getting it into the shower hose. I have heard astronauts also do not exactly shower in water (?) so maybe its impossible? BUT all of that aside, other than environmental dangers and certain implausibilities of using specific types of spellcraft due to how things are set up on space shuttles and space stations, I do feel the magical energy itself could be used, and would not suffer simply because the person casting the spell was not within the Earth’s boundaries. Hoodoo probably would not be superb for space stations…maybe in that case you’d be better advised to use Psionics, which is a paradigm that depends more on the will of the spellcaster than on his or her materials.

Special thanks to the reader who was a good sport, and was not offended by me asking to post this as an “Instant Classic.” 😀

Interesting question, and thoughtful answer! Now you’ve got me wondering! Would it be easier to evoke one of the planetary rulers if you were on there planet? hmmm

Well, I suspect the bigger problem would be having the concentration ability and the ability to survive there. I suspect its also not so easy wearing a space suit. 😉
What is interesting to me is, if I were born on another planet, would my astrological signs be different? I think they would have to be…how would that change my personality?

I think you have an honorary winner of the QYAM Contest- or at least an honorable mention :-). I liked this, it sure gets you thinking. Since magical energy isn’t bound by literally time nor space, I don’t see how it would make a difference, which is basically what you explained. I guess if you were born on Jupiter, Earth would be one of your signs :-D. Your ascendant would probably be different because the sun wouldn’t take 24 hours to complete a day so the horizon would be split differently I think. but if you’re talking about our solar system, the rest of the planets would still be where they are, right?

Yeah…but like..what about the moons of the other planet? And…would the Earth moon still be in my chart?
Re. the question, I thought it was both funny and interesting. I actually spent a good deal of time chatting with the person who sent it (who also assures me he was not serious when he asked if I’d been in space, lol, but felt it was a good opening.) 😉

Well you don’t see questions like that every day, that for sure… but it does raise some interesting questions – like what you asked about being born on another planet, how would it alter your birthsign, and so forth.
I’ve suspected more than once that one day science will advance to the point that it will begin to detect some sort of verifiable, testable evidence for planetary (heck, cosmic) influences on a person’s life and/or lifeforce…

An interesting addition to this; There are a group of scientists who firmly believe that there is a parallel universe.
Here is a quote taken directly from the page where you can find just some of this information:
“That there exist parallel universes, exactly like our universe. These universes are all related to ours; indeed, they branch off from ours, and our universe is branched off of others. Within these parallel universes, our wars have had different outcomes than the ones we know. Species that are extinct in our universe have evolved and adapted in others. In other universes, we humans may have become extinct.”
You can read more about this on this link:
    http://science.howstuffworks.com/parallel-universe.htm
And you can probably read more about this on other links. I thought it’s an interesting addition to the request of spell casting in outer space. But in a way I think it rather strange that someone would ask anyone at all if they’d been in outer space.
