**Many of my readers request these articles. Hello Occulties,

As St Anthony recently helped me with a big favor (as did, I believe, my dear friend St Dismas,) in finding a lost item, I was moved to write this post for all of you – and it’s been a very much requested one among those readers of mine who strongly believe St Anthony is their patron saint.

A Brief History of St Anthony
We are fortunate in that we have a fair amount of written history about St Anthony that we can trust is reliable. We know he was born Fernando Martins de Bulhoes around 1195 in Lisbon to a noble family of Portugal. He originally took vows to belong to the Augustinian order, but around 1219, after coming across the bodies of 5 martyred Fransiscan monks, he meditated on the heroism of the martyrs and found himself moved to join their order. He obtained permission to do so from the Pope and took the name Anthony upon joining the Fransiscans, a new order at the time.

His first duty as a Fransiscan monk was humble. He was a hermit who worked in the kitchens, however one day, when there were visiting monks from a Dominican order present for an ordination, there had been some confusion as to who should preach. The head of the hermitage chose Anthony to speak to those assembled, suspecting he might be the best qualified. While Anthony tried to refuse, he was overruled. It is said the quality of his deep voice and it’s intonations, the words he spoke and the way he wove them together that day were so moving to all assembled that from that day forward he was ordered by Brother Gratian to speak the gospel all over Lombardi. This soon attracted the attention of the very founder of Anthony’s order, St Francis of Assisi, who entrusted Anthony with the teaching religious studies their young monks. Throught this time, Anthony continued to spread the gospel in Italy and in France as well. He was even commissioned to write a book of his sermons, Sermons and Feast Days in 1226.

In 1231, Anthony became ill with an edema, and on the way back to Padua in the Poor Clare monestary in Arcella, he passed away aged 36 on June 13, 1231. He was canonized less than a year after his death and is sead to be the “Fastest made” saint in history. His relics still remain in Padua where they are a tourist destination for many pilgrims to this day.

His feast day is celebrated today, June 13.

The Catholic encyclopedia is a great source for history regarding St Anthony, as well as stories (some perhaps more legend than fact,) if you would like to learn more about St Anthony.

You may also enjoy the Wikipedia article regarding St Anthony which goes over his many patronages. He is often revered as a saint to help locate lost items, many ask his intercession in reconciling broken relationships, but he’s also often revered as an all purpose powerful saint. Some basic popular prayers/novenas to St Anthony

Traditionally there are a few ways to pray to a saint. When I was young, I was taught to light a white candle in front of a statue or picture of the saint (suchas a holy card,) with a glass of fresh water next to it. This is still my general method, though sometimes I do use colored seven day candles instead, or blessed and dressed candles. Others simply light a candle in front of the picture of the saint. Some people light no candle and just say the prayer. Pick which of these is easiest for you. While some Saints are traditionally prayed to on particular days, some people only pray to them on Sunday or pray any day of the week. Please do not bombard me with 1000’s of questions on this because I’m going to be writing an article discussing the Hoodoo and rootwork methods shortly in another article, but the length of this article is already prohibitive, hehe.)

This first one is a novena, so this means you are supposed to say it for 9 days in a row. This first prayer is prayed every day for each of the nine days, and the nine prayers following it are said 1 for each of the nine days. So you pray the prayers below then pray the proper prayers on the matching day.

The novena starts with a daily recital of the Prayer of St Anthony of Padua (which is also suitable to be prayed one time, or as you need it – it’s it’s own prayer and can be used independantly) given below:

Oh wonderful St Anthony, glorious on account of the fame of thy miracles, and through the condescension of Jesus in coming in the form of a little child to rest in thy arms, obtain for me of His bounty the grace which I ardently desire from the depths of my heart. (Make your request here.) Thou who was so loving towards miserable sinners, regard not the unworthiness of those who pray to thee, but the Glory of God that it may be once again magnified by this request (make your request here again) which I now request of you in earnestness. Amen

Pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be in honor of St Anthony*

Then each day (numbered here) you speak the above prayers each day 9 days, and say the prayers given below for the specific day.

Day one:
Oh holy St. Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy while on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me the favor I seek in this novena (Make your request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle; even so, you are the saint of miracles. Oh gentle and loving Saint Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms, and thee gratitude of my heart will always be yours. Amen

One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be in honor of Saint Anthony.

Day two:
Oh miracle-working St. Anthony, remember that it never has been heard that you left without help or relief anyone who in his need had recourse to you. Animated now with the most lively confidence, even with full conviction of not being refused, I fly for refuge to thee, Oh most favored friend of the Infant Jesus. Oh eloquent preacher of the divine mercy, despise not my supplications but, bringing them before the throne of God, strengthen them by your intercession and obtain for me the favor I seek in this novena (Make your request). Amen

One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be in honor of Saint Anthony.

Day Three:
Oh purest St. Anthony, who through your angelic virtue was made worthy to be caressed by the Divine Child Jesus, to hold him in your arms and press him to your heart. I entreat you to cast a benevolent glance upon me. Oh glorious St. Anthony, born under the protection of Mary Immaculate, on the Feast of her Assumption into Heaven, and consecrated to her and now so powerful an intercessor in Heaven, I beseech you to obtain for me the favor I ask in this novena (Make your request). Oh great wonder-worker, intercede for me that God may grant my request. Amen

One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be in honor of Saint Anthony.

Day Four:
I salute and honor you, Oh powerful helper, St. Anthony. The Christian world confidently turns to you and experiences your tender compassion and powerful assistance in so many necessities and sufferings that I am encouraged in my need to seek you help in obtaining a favorable answer to my request for the favor I seek in this novena (Make your request). Oh holy St. Anthony, I beseech you, obtain for me the grace that I desire. Amen

One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and Glory Be in honor of Saint Anthony.
Anthony

Day five:
I salute you, St. Anthony, lily of purity, ornament and glory of Christianity. I salute you, great Saint, cherub of wisdom and seraph of divine love. I rejoice at the favors our Lord has so liberally bestowed upon you. In humility and confidence I entreat you to help me, for I know that God has given you charity and pity, as well as power. I ask you by the love you did feel toward the Infant Jesus as you held him in your arms to tell Him now of the favor I seek through your intercession in this novena (Make your request). Amen

One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and Glory Be in honor of Saint Anthony.

Day six:
Oh glorious St. Anthony, chosen by God to preach his Word, you received from Him the gift of tongues and the power of working the most extraordinary miracles. Oh good St. Anthony, pray that I may fulfill the will of God in all things so that I may love Him, with you, for all eternity. Oh kind St. Anthony, I beseech you, obtain for me the grace that I desire, the favor I seek in this novena (Make your request). Amen

One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be in honor of Saint Anthony.

Day Seven:
Oh renowned champion of the faith of Christ, most holy St. Anthony, glorious for your many miracles, obtain for me from the bounty of my Lord and God the grace which I ardently seek in this novena (make your request). Oh holy St. Anthony, ever attentive to those who invoke you, grant me that aid of your powerful intercession. Amen

One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and Glory Be in honor of Saint Anthony.

Day Eight:
Oh holy St. Anthony, you have shown yourself so powerful in your intercession, so tender and so compassionate towards those who honor you and invoke you in suffering and distress. I beseech you most humbly and earnestly to take me under your protection in my present necessities and to obtain for me the favor I desire (Make your request). Recommend my request to the merciful Queen of Heaven, that she may plead my cause with you before the throne of her Divine Son. Amen

One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and Glory Be in honor of Saint Anthony.

Day Nine:
Saint Anthony, servant of Mary, glory of the Church, pray for our Holy Father, our bishops, our priests, our Religious Orders, that, through their pious zeal and apostolic labors, all may be united in faith and give greater glory to God. St. Anthony, helper of all who invoke you, pray for me and intercede for me before the throne of Almighty God that I be granted the favor I so earnestly see in this novena (Make your request). Amen

One Our Father, one Hail Mary, and Glory Be in honor of Saint Anthony.

Anthony2Prayer to St Anthony to locate a lost item:
Saint Anthony, perfect imitator of Jesus, who received from God the special power of restoring lost things, grant that I may find (name of lost item) which has been lost. At least restore to me peace and tranquility of mind, the loss of which has afflicted me even more than my material loss. To this favor I ask another of you: that I may always remain in possession of the true good that is God. Let me rather lose all things than lose God, my supreme good. Let me never suffer the loss of my greatest treasure, eternal life with God. Amen.

Prayer to St Anthony (general use)
Glorious Saint Anthony, my friend and special protector, I come to you with full confidence in my present necessity. In your overflowing generosity you hear all those who turn to you. Your influence before the throne of God is so effective that the Lord readily grants great favors at your request. Please listen to my humble petition in spite of my unworthiness and sinfulness. Consider only your great and constant love for Jesus and Mary, and my desire for their glory and mercy. I beg you to obtain for me the grace I so greatly need, if it be God’s will and for the good of my soul. I place this earnest petition in the care of the little mission children so that they may present it to you along their innocent prayers. Bless me, powerful Saint Anthony, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer to St Anthony 2 (general use)

Good Saint Anthony, in God’s providence you have secured for His people many marvelous favors. You have been especially celebrated, good Saint Anthony, for your goodness to the poor and the hungry, for finding employment for those seeking it, for your special care of those who travel, and for keeping safe from harm all who must be away from home. You are widely known also, good Saint Anthony, for securing peace in the family, for your delicate mercy in finding lost things, for safe delivery of messages, and for your concern for women in childbirth. In honoring you, Saint Anthony, for the many graces our Lord grants through your favor, we trustfully and confidently ask your aid in our present need. Pray for us, good Saint Anthony, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. May it be a source of joy, O God, to your Church that we honor the memory of your Confessor and Doctor, Saint Anthony. May his spiritual help always make us strong, and by his assistance may we enjoy an eternal reward. This we ask through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Alright, more in a post 2 where I am going to discuss some Hoodoo and Rootworking practices which involve St Anthony. I hope the above has been educational. Happy Feast Day St Anthony, and thank you again so very much for your help! 🙂

*For those of you unfamiliar with these prayers they are as follows:
Our Father
Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who tresspass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art though amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Glory Be (sometimes called “Gloria”)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost now and forever. As it was in the beginning, let it be now and forever and ever. Amen

Cat, I just remembered a time St Anthony helped me find something. Can I use this space to praise him?
Thank You St Anthony for helping me find my ring. It’s a beautiful diamond band that I love very much. It’s very important to me and I lost it through my own carelessness. I didn’t think I would find it all, but I said the following prayer to St. Anthony the whole time I was looking for it, and lo and behold I found it!
St Anthony, St Anthony please come round
Something’s lost and can’t be found
    Hail St Anthony!

Definitely will put up a few things about returning a lover with St Anthony’s assistance when I get a free moment to even type some posts. If electric storms knocking out my power had not made my life and business hellish this past month, it would already be up here. 😛 I’d say when it rains it pours (meaning in the bad luck sense,) but I guess that’s a bad pun (given the electrical storms being composed of lightning, high winds, and pouring rain, hehehehe.)

I have been practicing for over 40 years. Some spells work all the time better than others. I am going to try some of yours because you seem very level headed about your work. I did magic before there were spell books printed in stores. I started off with Black not knowing what the hell I was doing & soon found what comes around goes around! Love your site Thanks Nikki

I need to use this. Though the object I want is not lost i just want it returned. I want a former flame to return the keys to my apartment. I know your thinking just change my locks, but my apartment doesn’t want me to do that on my own, they want me to try and get the key back or they will charge me for a new locks. Sigh I’ll give this a try.
