Hello Occulties,
Its come up to me a lot recently that several of you are looking to lighten your costs by blessing and dressing your own vigil candles. π That’s great! I like seeing people taking an interest in doing for themselves…however a lot of you are lost on HOW this is properly done, so I am going to let you know how I personally was taught to bless and dress a seven -day glass-encased vigil candle.
Originally, I was told to use a coffin nail, but I have found a screwdriver (especially a warmed screwdriver,) works just as well and is easier to handle. So, get a screwdriver, and heat the end of this by either holding it in the flame of a spare candle, or by leaning it on a stove burner. PLEASE exercise caution when doing this. Many of the handles of screwdrivers can become melty if you overheat them. I personally use a spare soy candle, and heat the blade (I prefer a phillips-head over a flat-head,) for about 20 seconds in the flame, and then you punch 5 holes into the candle in a rough circle shape.
Now, add a drop of the proper oil/s into each hole you have punched into the top of the candle (for those of you who are using a lot of different oils, blend them in a seperate container or in your palm and use an eye-dropper – too much oil can cause burning difficulties with the candles,) and a sprinkling of appropriate herbs (just a pinch,) on to the top of your candle.
Place your right hand on the top of the candle and your left hand should be holding the glass chimney and say “I bless this candle to bring fast and lasting success to me in (purpose of candle). As is my will, so be it!” This is not charging the candle for spell use – that is a bit different, but I am giving you the low-down on how to DRESS the candle. π
If you are burning a candle you are going to want to energetically charge the candle prior to the spell, as I have instructed in several spells. You may envision the spell energy flowing into candle from yourself (some people see this is white light, others see it as colors which correspond to the candle’s use and often its color,) or if you are still shakey about energy transferrance, you might simply hold the candle in both your hands for a few minutes while you clearly picture your desired spell outcome, or you may do both of these at once! π Once you are used to working with energy, you will have your own preferred method.
I’ll give you a few dressings you can use on an undressed seven day candle. Remember to use name papers! There are a few different methods, but I will list how to make out the name papers below the dressings.
Controlling Candle:
Purple seven-day glass encased candle,
Commanding oil,
Poppy seed,
Licorice root (powdered or a 1-2 SMALL chips,)
Calamus root(powdered or a 1-2 SMALL chips.)
Name paper: write target’s name in black ink nine times like this:
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
Turn the paper so that the names run vertically and then write, horizontally, across them the command you wish the target to obey. Fold the paper in half once TOWARDS you. Fold in half again TOWARDS you. Place beneath candle.
Love Drawing Candle:
Red seven-day glass encased candle,
Love Me oil
Cardamom seeds
Catnip,
Rose petals
Name Paper:
write target’s name nine times like this in black ink:
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
Turn paper so that the names are running vertically and write your name or the petitioner’s name horizontally across these names (it will make sort of a grid shape) in the same fashion as above:
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
Now write the command (such as “Love me,” repeated over and over or perhaps “fall deeper in love with me,” etc,) in a circle in RED pen around the names. It is okay if the circle is a rough shape. π Fold the paper in half once TOWARDS you. Fold in half again TOWARDS you. Place beneath candle.
Money-drawing Candle:
Green seven-day glass encased candle,
Money-drawing Oil,
Nutmeg
Irish moss flakes,
Dragon’s blood resin
Name paper: Write your name or the petitioner’s name 7 times like this:
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
FirstName LastName
Turn the paper so the names are running vertically and write your command seven times horizontially over the names in the same fashion as above, ie:
Command
Command
Command
Command
Command
Command
Command
Your command can be anything you desire, but a few examples might include “Has lots of money,” or “Attracts money magnetically,” etc. Fold the paper in half once TOWARDS you. Fold in half again TOWARDS you. Place beneath candle.
I hope this has been educational. π

Hi Cat, I’m a rookie spellcaster and your blog has been very helpful and an interesting read. Since I’m a little strapped for cash, I cannot afford to buy some expensive herbs like cardamom, and some of the herbs specified (like catnip, poppy seed, licorice, calamus, and Irish moss flakes) aren’t available in our country. I’m from the Philippines. Do you have any recommendations as to what inexpensive and/or more accessible substitutes I may use? Thank you very much in advance. Blessings be.

Alright, well the best thing I can give you with a few of those (for example, poppy seed is widely available…can’t you even grow poppies if need be? Well, you need seeds for them – and they are a popular plant,) or things suchas catnip (which is cheap and popular in the USA,) can be ordered via mail.
As it says in my FAQ, I am not into “substitutions,” and you’re asking for several. π Normally my answer is “the essential oil of x herb,” but in your case, I’m going to recommend you try using the internet to order these items. While customs may be leery of ordered poppy seeds if they are not customary in your native diet, I can say there must be seeds to poppy flowers (only one is the opium poppy, so try oriental-poppy seeds which cannont make opium,) in a gardening shop… And also try out Mountain Rose Herbs (http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/) which offers a wide selection but also can tell you alternate names of the same plant. For example, calamus is often called “sweet flag.”
Just persevere in looking for what you want. π I’ve been known to order items from across the world just to get the best item. A lot of us need to struggle to get different items. If you feel you can’t locate any items, and it is that much of a problem, you may try checking out a different form of spellcraft. :S
After all, just as there is no real substitute for real chocolate, nor any “REAL” substitute which matches exactly what you’re looking for (Sorry) what you’ve asked here is asking me, “Can I make chocolate chip cookies with substitutes for chocolate chips, flour, butter, chicken eggs, sugar, and brown sugar?” 0_o Well, no, you need to get the right ingredients and missing that many means you might want to seek a different type of spellcraft.

I understand. Am also taking this seriously and I know that sometimes, no substitutes at all will do. So that means I just might have to look for friends who can bring me back some specific plants/herbs/seeds from other countries. π
Anyway, I’ll be looking around for available herbs first (not an easy task here) because I do enjoy reading your blog and love your take on the craft, so am raring to try some of your spells.
Thank you so much for the advice. Am looking forward to reading more of your posts! π

any particular way to dispose of the jar after the 7 days & the candle has burnt out? or just throw it away?

Some people throw out the glass chimney (I do,) others reuse the chimney to burn a “pull-out” seven day candle, but you can defintely just throw the chimney away when your are done with the candle.

Well, I do tell you how to anoint candles and I do go over how to dress and bless particular shapes – you just need to be on the particular post where I do. If I was going to put down a guide that didn’t require anyone to do the actual work of looking in the blog on a particular spell, I’d recommmend looking in my upcoming book. π Keep your eyes peeled.
In the meantime check out the spells and spellwork and Questions You’ve Asked Me posts.
